About-Me

A little something about me.

Dr. Joseph Weaver is a doctorate-educated, ANCC Board Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner providing care for those with emotional and mental health dysfunction. He began his career in mental health in 2009 as a Captain of a Combat and Operational Stress Control (COSC) unit in the United States Army Reserve. Joe served active duty service members by assisting them in managing emotional, cognitive, and behavioral issues after exposure to stressful or traumatic events at home or overseas.

Joe earned his bachelor’s degree in biology in 1994 and became a registered nurse in 2007. Ten years later, he earned his Master’s degree (MSN) and obtained the license to practice as a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Dr. Weaver graduated with honors and earned an Award for Excellence in Psychiatric Mental Health. In 2022, Joe returned to Stony Brook University and received his Doctorate degree in nursing practice (DNP), graduating magna cum laude. He has been working since 2017 as a consultation–liaison psychiatric nurse practitioner and preceptor for nurse practitioners and physician assistants in an acute care hospital in New York. He assists at NYU Long Island hospital in educating the nursing and medical staff on topics such as delirium, alcohol withdrawal, and other substance use disorders and how to treat them in the acute care setting. He also has an outpatient practice, where he specializes in treating patients who have post-traumatic stress disorder, also known as PTSD. Dr. Weaver is certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing( EMDR), and other therapies that can assist in helping people with traumatic experiences to recapture a new sense of self that incorporates the “here and now” awareness, resiliency, acceptance, and forgiveness.

Joe also sees patients with general mental health issues, such as generalized anxiety, depressive disorders, and psychosis. I am passionate about helping patients and their families navigate intellectual disabilities that may occur with Down syndrome and Prader-Willi syndrome.
